Most frequently when I am describing the services I provide for others. I am not a child photographer.

Yet, ironically, every single day I find myself taking photographs of children. Granted, they are my children, but it does not make the task any less difficult. In fact, in my experience photographing families, my son proudly holds the Impossible Child To Photograph title above all others.

Yesterday was a beautiful day. Cool, but not cold, and with just a hint of sun peeking through the clouds to warm our cheeks as we went about running our errands and making our requisite weekly zoo trip. I was determined to finally take my son's 4th birthday portraits. I had a vision of an adorable Toy Story set to match the theme of his February birthday party. Before the kids stirred in the morning, I boxed up my son's toys and loaded my equipment into the car. After the zoo, we headed to the Municipal Rose Garden, where my flawless artistic vision would spring to life.

Things did not go quite as planned. I anticipated some difficulty. Perhaps some light wrangling. Instead I found myself shooting erratically, running at full speed after a lighting fast, squealing preschooler who wanted nothing to do with his favorite toys when there was so much Outside to soak in. After four (maybe five) failed attempts to seat him in the designated area, I threw in the towel.

We went home. Immediately, he wanted to play in the backyard. I lugged my toddler and the camera outside. Buzz and Woody went to their place on the table, and he started lining up little green Army men just so before he turned on the sprinkler to get mud started for their daily dunking. I could see my attention-getting window shrinking. Calling on my old bag of tricks, I started singing a goofy song.

Wouldn't you know it? He looked. He smiled. And my heart melted.

It was at that moment that I realized that I didn't need a set to make his portraits special. Every rare moment that I can catch on camera of him smiling or laughing is so very dear to my heart. I want him to see photographs as reminders of wonderful times, not the preservation of stern commands or resentful feelings.

He is four. He likes to run down paths and through fields for the sheer joy of it. He makes mud pies to feel the different textures of the mud and rocks and sand. He dumps paints together in the sink to create colorful swirls. He watches in mute awe as airplanes and helicopters pass overhead. He cannot speak his mind, but he can show me just what he is thinking, feeling, or wants. So I know when he tugs my hand while a fast song is playing, he wants me to dance with him. When he laughs, I know he is happy. And when he lays his head on my chest when the song is over, I know that he loves me. Life is simple, chaotic, and beautiful when you are 4. I'm in no hurry to enforce the "Sit still and say cheese!" method.
El Paso has seen no more than a light dusting in areas, while the East coast and Midwest are being hit with a one-two punch of snow and ice storms. I'm sure that the people who have to deal with iced over roads or shovel their driveways are sick of dealing with it.

Personally, I love it.

Winter can be harsh and unyielding, but it can also be soft and serene. An overcast sky and a fresh white blanket of snow is more appealing to me than a beach on a tropical island. I know, I know. It seems crazy. But there is something soulful about the solitude of winter. It brings a special kind of peace. At least until my son is itching to get outside to run around in the pretty white stuff.

My ultimate goal with this shoot was to portray the wonders of winter in all of its aspects: The magical, the peaceful, the commanding. Using the light to portray various moods, and post-processing to bring a little extra magic to our White Sands shoot, we created a set of winter wonderland portraits that I am so, so proud of.
I adore cooking a big meal on Thanksgiving for several guests and partaking in Christmas traditions with my children. I'm pretty big on anything and everything that promotes family togetherness, which is probably why it is my favorite time of year to photograph family sessions, too. The weather is (typically) cooler, which means cuddling is more natural and enjoyable than it would be in the dog days of summer. That easy connection is so, so important to me when I am shooting, and I know it is one of the factors that people love when looking through their images.

I especially enjoyed being able to take this family's first formal family/Christmas portraits! They were so much fun, and their oh-so-adorable little one is so at ease in front of the camera that it was impossible to take a bad shot (which made culling the images pretty darn difficult!). Enjoy the cuteness overload!
I was immediately reminded of the dancing in the street scene in the popular film adaptation of the Nicholas Sparks novel "The Notebook". It had been a while since I had photographed a couple's session, so as soon as I got home I put out a model call to local friends and started planning.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Models were secured, screenshots were shared, wardrobes discussed, and a date set.
Then the cold front came, just in time for session day. It was freezing. And wet. And windy. Not ideal conditions for a shoot inspired by a love story that mostly takes place in the warm, vibrant summertime. So we adjusted the wardrobe and, when the overcast afternoon rolled around, we steeled ourselves against the winter weather advisory and met up. After a small hiccup that may or may not have involved my not packing a CF card in my bag, we dove right in.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">And they rocked it.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">If they had reservations or were uncomfortable in any way, it did not show. Not one little bit. By the end of the hour, my feet were practically blocks of ice, but when I sat down in my car to thaw them and quickly flip through the images, I couldn't help smiling.
<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">Love is an amazing thing. Even when essentially acting a part, it isn't forced. It flows naturally, and can be captured with breath taking clarity, regardless of obstacles or discomforts. This family has love in spades. And, boy, did it make them perfect for their roles.
It was overcast and close to sunset, two factors that often make a time that would normally be a glorious golden hour into an environment about two shades darker than I like to work with. But, with my gorgeous model and loyal sidekick OCF, we photographed through the diminishing light and managed to capture the small sliver of sunset sky peeking through the clouds.

This session was just so much fun! The car, the boots, the wind assisting in fanning my beautiful client's hair at just the right moments. It was a great shoot, and a lovely night despite the looming rain clouds.

Technically, these "bridal" portraits were taken just before the bride's first anniversary. It's never too late (and always fun!) to break out your gown and rock a glam bridal session!
Happy Belated Anniversary, Carolyn! May you celebrate many, many more in happiness.
Weeks 3, 4, & 5 - 7/14-8/3 | Project 365 | El Paso, Fort Bliss Portrait PhotographerThe last few weeks have been a whirlwind! My husband was in the field, Lily is cutting her eye teeth, and Alex has been bouncing off the walls because it was too hot to play outside for a while. Then the first rain came. We celebrated with cocoa, movie marathons, and some tasty treat-making, and the days got away from me. Before I knew it, I was two weeks behind blogging my Project 365! Fortunately, I have not stopped taking pictures, so getting this catch-up post put together took no time at all.
So I did what I do best: Played with my kids (who are both currently obsessed with LEGOs and Mega Bloks) and cooked wholesome meals. I even took a stab at homemade, dairy-free Nutella (which is, by the way, dee-licious!). I have been brainstorming some creative sessions, so stay tuned for next week's post, which may have some photo clues about the next stylized session. ;)
After realizing that my camera was exhausted from our two weeks of travel and only sporadic charging, I found myself using a point and shoot camera for the first few days. I remembered how to use the manual settings, thank goodness!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">We had a pretty slow week. I've been on a green smoothie health kick for the past couple of 1weeks (10 pounds down, woo hoo!), Lils ate her first solid food without choking, and Alex is obsessed with shapes (hence the round railroad tracks). No exciting fireworks photos here (both of the kiddos are too young to fully appreciate them), but we did manage to squeeze in an impromptu family shoot this evening. July is shaping up to be a nice, relaxing month for the Urrutia clan.

Yes, the wind can be insane. Yes, there is no escaping the direct light. But I find that I do my best work when I am challenging myself to overcome the obstacles that inevitably crop up in on-location shooting. In this case, it was embracing my recent love of dramatic, direct sunlight. With the perfectly white sands acting as a massive reflector, getting studio-like shots was effortless. Mix in a gorgeous gal, a flowing red gown, and the visual interest of thorny shrubs and protruding pillars of gypsum, and this windswept session was a smashing success.
She was the inspiration for an entirely different kind of creative series: Art is Beauty. This series will serve to showcase the gorgeous body art of the subject in both studio sets and on-location.

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">The first part of the series was shot exclusively in studio using a single flash head and softbox, with a reflector positioned for fill light. The wardrobe is provided by the model with the exception of the black tulle skirt, and makeup services were provided by Emily D. Vinyl of Beauty is Art. It was my first shoot in the new studio space, and I was favorably impressed with the variety of shots I was able to get for being in such close quarters. I am looking forward to Part 2 of the series, scheduled for 6/2/13.
Those are under wraps until the premiere of her gown on her wedding day. And, oh my goodness, it is hard not to post them. Because she is absolutely stunning in her wedding gown!

<span style="font-family: Georgia,"Times New Roman",serif;">This gown was a little gem I found while antiques shopping in West El Paso. It is a quintessential princess gown, and, for $25, was an absolute steal. It is likely to debut in a creative session in the future. For this particular shoot, it serves to illustrate the diversity possible in a single bridal shoot. Various lighting conditions, locations, and styles from classically posed to editorial drama, bridals are a perfect way to showcase a bride's unique style and vision of their big day. I adore weddings, and more than capturing the details of the day itself I love to capture the excitement and beauty of the bride. The anticipation of the beginning of a new chapter in their lives makes them shine brightly, even in shadow.
Whether it is for a blog feature or a chance to be printed in a magazine, there is always a degree of vulnerability when it comes to presenting your work to others in an effort to be deemed worthy. I am not inherently competitive, and generally modest about my work, so submitting to publications has never really been a priority for me.

But something about picking up the camera and producing artwork for myself, simply for the creation of something beautiful and magical, made something change about the way I looked at my work. Here I was, hoarding dozens of images from a session that I had poured my heart and soul into on an external hard drive. It didn't make sense. Why was I creating art only to cram it into a black box and show mere glimpses of it to the world? So I did something I had never had the courage to do: Push back my sense of modesty and relay, instead, my confidence in my worth. I submitted a series of images to Essere, a small creative photography publication based in Virginia. I never expected to hear back.

About an hour later, I received an e-mail stating that they wanted to include my series in their May issue.

I had to read it several times to make very extra sure that I had seen it correctly. And then I got excited. Very, very, very excited. But I am a somewhat superstitious person, and did not want to jinx it. Instead of announcing it right away, I resolved to keep it fairly quiet (with the exception of disclosure to a few good friends and family).

Until I received a beautiful copy in the mail today, that is. I just cannot keep silent anymore. I am simply thrilled at the prospect of having three full spreads in a printed magazine! I do not desire fame or fortune in the grand scheme of things. Still, it is pretty darn cool to see my work amongst some seriously amazing talent. I am honored to have been included.

You can purchase a copy of the May 2013 or other issues of Essere magazine here.

After about 30-45 minutes of resistance, I make a little headway with this:

And, when all of the energy used in eluding me is exhausted, I somehow manage to sneak in one or two of these:

By the time I have decent photos of this kid snapped, I'm too exhausted to even attempt to edit them. Props to those who exclusively photograph young children and newborns! You are rock stars!Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584338940343017067noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2557854200017465526.post-86359173180818061302013-04-16T07:17:00.001-06:002013-05-28T17:47:45.823-06:00Love Alters Not | Anniversary | El Paso, Fort Bliss Portrait PhotographerWhen you have a history with someone, can laugh with them, can surmise a thought from a single look, that is a love to cherish. The light and mirth of this couple was absolutely infectious. I found myself laughing and smiling right along with them, despite the cold morning wind nearly blowing me over as I knelt precariously around cacti and thorny bushes to get just the angles I was looking for (photography can be perilous!). Congratulations on a year of marriage! May there be many decades of joy to come.
This session was a fun one thanks to a few cute ideas that were mentioned to me during consultations and the use of several locations. I won't unveil the really exciting ones until they are seen in the gallery, but keep your eyes peeled for a few more (super cute!) portraits from this session popping up in the near future! (Hint: They feature airport signs and bubble gum!) Congratulations A Family on the upcoming arrival of your baby girl!
Sunsets are always beautiful, but there is something uniquely magical about the rosy glow over the mountain's mighty peaks, or the rainbow burst of color as the sun slips beyond the endless desert horizon. So when this beautiful momma-to-be said she was up for it, I was beyond thrilled! This is just a sneak peek of the fun (somewhat chilly) session! Congratulations to the {L} family on the impending arrival of your baby boy!
It's a big undertaking. Websites, blogs, email addresses, domain names, Facebook pages and, most importantly, business documentation all need to be changed over. It's a pricy endeavor when the entire look is overhauled and one has to purchase new business cards, packaging, logos, etc. It can be risky, too. It's impossible to follow a band that changes their name all the time. It is possible to lose the following one has worked hard to gain.

So why did I choose to do it? There are several reasons. First and foremost, my initials are not as unique as one might think. MMU may not have been trademarked or used in the USA, but it is used at Manchester Metropolitan University, which I imagine must have been confusing for some of their students. I would frequently see photos or social invitations posted on my wall, and felt a sense of guilt for unintentionally misleading others.

My business name was originally beget from my indecision to use either my maiden or my married name. Legally, I did not want to get into any kind of trouble for assuming a false name, and I did not want to settle for my maiden name only to have to change it later. So my nameless business became MMU Photography.

But the name never really fit, and neither did my branding elements or colors. They were sleek and professional, but they did not fit the warm, curled-up-by-the-hearth storytelling, heirloom feel that I want my work to convey.

I have been mulling these changes for a good long while, but I was not inspired to pull the trigger until I planned and executed my recent fairy tale session. So much of my heart and pure creative energy was poured into the project, and the end result was a perfect example of the romantic, timeless work that I strive for. Everything fell into place naturally. Now, when I look at the new name, warm colors and the antique touches, I feel like I'm at home.

Admittedly, I should have had more consideration for how the elements of my business might come together and represent me as a photographer. Like many new photographers, I was so swept up in the excitement of starting my own business that I did not take the time to select branding that would accurately reflect me as a person or my goals as an artist and a professional photographer. But, like other photographers, I evolved, I tweaked, I adjusted as I went, and finally found a place where I am happy and excited about what the future holds. It can be scary to create something different and put yourself out there, but once you find yourself and your brand, it is such a revelation. To thine own self, be true.Meganhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/08584338940343017067noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2557854200017465526.post-29529927419887107652013-02-03T18:52:00.001-07:002013-02-03T18:52:28.029-07:00Allerleirauh | Grimm Fairy Tales | Fort Bliss, El Paso Stylized Portrait Session PhotographerBooks were a major part of my childhood. I could lose myself in the pages of a good story. I would read beloved novels or short story collections over and over until the covers were falling off and the bindings loose. I had quite a few books with a lovely brown masking tape spine.

Perhaps the most loved and tattered of my books are my collections of fairy tales. Hans Christian Anderson and, a bit later, the brothers Grimm are likely at least partially responsible for my sense of responsibility. After all, many of their writings are cautionary tales concerning the consequences of the character's actions. As an aspiring artist, many of their tales resonated with me and instilled in me a desire to create. The imagery in some of the lesser known stories stayed with me for years; I wanted to be able to spin a likewise enthralling thread.

Allerleirauh (known by several names, among them Manypelts) was one of the first Grimm tales that I read that did not have a Disney adaptation. It likely never will. There are elements of it in the beginning that would have to be very skewed to be considered child-friendly. But the visual elements in the story beg to be brought to life, from the mantle to the gorgeous gowns to the three golden items (a ring, a reel, and a spindle). I had to do some improvising, and quite a bit of modernizing, to bring this last minute session to life, but with the help of my amazing model and oodles of determination, we got it done. And I couldn't be happier with the results.
When they do it recounting the details of the events leading up to their first date after 10 years of marriage, it is inspiring. For a couple in love, those details don't fade over time. It is possibly because, like most married couples, they are asked to tell it over and over again to new friends, to children, at family get-togethers. It is not so much what is said. It is the way the tale is told. Warm glances and smiles exchanged, leaning into each other just so that the height discrepancies melt away and they are equals. Add into the mix the perfectly natural way they hold hands walking between shooting spots and I was in photography heaven. Congratulations on a decade of marriage, and may you celebrate many more decades to come!
I admitted it. When I go out to a
session on overcast days, I rejoice, for there is just enough light filtering
in through the grayish skies to give me that perfectly delicious, even lighting
that I adore. When the sun is out in all
of its glory, I test the strength of the rays with my hand and make a mental
note to seek shade ASAP. I work with the

During my hiatus, I have been resolute in my mission to
capture the everyday goings-on of my home, my children, my life. Inside the sanctuary of our house, with the
beautiful light pouring in through the windows diffused by the white paper
blinds, it is easy to find and use the light.
Outside is the battle. I have
had something of a phobia of outside light in El Paso. 45 minutes before sunset and about an hour
after sunrise, I have no issues. Those
are the golden hours, after all, a photographer’s best friend when it comes to achieving
delicious golden, diffused light. But
when it came to the hours approaching or just beyond noon, I balk. Harsh midday light is a challenge in the best
of locations, so photographing in the El Paso desert with the sun beaming off of every reflective surface seemed to me especially
daunting. So I avoided it. At zoos and parks, I sought refuge in the
dark corners, or took backlit portraits to avoid dreaded hotspots. I did not want blown out skin and harsh shadows,
so I shot what I knew.
